Academic English tips for ESL researchers and students

Academic English isn't fluent English in a suit. It has its own register, conventions and hedging — and it's learnable.

Register and hedging

Replace 'I think' with 'the evidence suggests'. Use 'may', 'might' and 'appears to' to soften claims. Reserve absolute statements ('shows', 'proves') for places where the data truly supports them.

Sentence rhythm

Alternate long analytical sentences with short summary sentences. This is how native academic writers control pace — and why their writing feels authoritative.
